Schools are spaces where children learn a lot more than gaining Education. Other than academics, which is by far the most desirable outcome of it, we need to understand the value for Social and Emotional based learning.

Social-emotional learning includes the following:

Developing a sense of self- Every individual needs to have a sense of self which is an important factor in their daily life. Exploring oneself and developing a self-image right from the start is indispensable and should be taught in Preschool Activities at home as well.

Building relationships with other people- We are born in a community and the ability to build relationships is an integral part of our lives.

Solving problems- social and emotional learning includes having the capacity to solve problems at the individual, personal, and societal levels at all our life stages.

Overcoming obstacles- A very important part of our lives where we need to incorporate Social and Emotional Learning is the ability to overcome problems in our lives.

Developing empathy- Having empathy to understand oneself and others is an important factor of Social and Emotional Learning.

Gaining a sense of social justice and learning to manage emotions- As we grow, we need to gain a sense of values like justice, equality, establishing brotherhood, and emotional expression and regulation as important segments of our lives to make it wholesome.

The Value of social and emotional Based Learning

Social-emotional awareness reduces emotional distress, fewer disciplinary issues in the home and at school, motivates the student to attend school as he adapts and accepts the environment, and also results in improved class engagement, test scores, and better grades.

Social-emotional learning is vital for students because it teaches them crucial life skills, including the ability to understand themselves, develop a positive self-image, take responsibility for their actions, and forge relationships with the people around them.

Role of Schooling in developing Social and Emotional Learning

SEL skills can be taught explicitly by the teacher through direct instruction and role-playing. Several Strategies, such as cooperative learning, can be used within the classroom to promote the development of social-emotional skills. SEL can be integrated with the existing academic curricula in literacy, math, and social studies. Finally, schools can work to create a climate and culture focused on social-emotional learning as a wrap-around support of all that is happening within classrooms.

As schools embrace people from different backgrounds, who face diverse challenges, students need to understand this and develop empathy and compassion.

Therefore, teaching social-emotional learning can improve long-term career prospects.

However, this is not the only way to further social-emotional learning within school environments. Students can also develop these skills and tools during other lessons. At the same time, everyday interactions with teachers can also help students build interpersonal skills, self-awareness, self-management skills, and decision-making abilities.

Home environment and the Social and Emotional Learning and Development

Social-emotional skills cannot be learned in the vacuum of school alone. In schools, students are usually grouped with peers of the same age and similar ability levels and overall, there are a limited set of experiences that the school can use to anchor social-emotional instruction.

Extending this kind of learning into the home broadens the array of real-world experiences for students to learn and practice social-emotional skills. Engaging families as partners in that learning can also add greater meaning and relevance to the lessons happening at school. Social-emotional learning outside of school can be dynamic and responsive, growing and changing depending on what EACH child needs. Furthermore, extending SEL conversations into the home allows for instruction that is mutually reinforcing with what is happening in the classroom.

Parents and caregivers play the biggest role in social/emotional development because they offer the most consistent relationships for their children. Consistent experiences with family members, teachers, and other adults help children learn about relationships and explore emotions in predictable interactions. They and the school shall try to understand the value of Social and emotional learning which is as important as Cognitive Learning and help develop it in young children.
